Spanish Grand Prix: McLaren’s Strategy Holds Under Pressure as Piastri Triumphs
In a dramatic Spanish Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri secured victory, while Max Verstappen’s tactical gamble raised concerns for the McLaren team. Team principal Andrea Stella revealed that the team’s initial confidence waned as Verstappen’s three-stop strategy played out, ultimately proving competitive despite McLaren’s two-stop plan.
Verstappen, who made his first pit stop at the end of lap 13, continuously reduced McLaren’s lead. By the time Piastri pitted from the lead on lap 22, Verstappen was just five seconds adrift. His switch to medium tires allowed him to close the gap to under four seconds before his subsequent stops.
Stella commented on this pivotal moment: “When we saw Verstappen stopping, we thought it would be a three-stopper—not a problem since we had overtaken him. But he was faster than expected.” McLaren’s drivers, Lando Norris and Piastri, faced challenges managing tire temperatures, which became critical late in the race.
“They reported concerns about overheating,” Stella noted, acknowledging Norris’s difficulty with front-left tire graining. However, a late surge from Piastri stabilized their strategy, allowing for a controlled pit sequence.
Evaluating the overall performance, Stella indicated that while the two-stop strategy initially seemed optimal, it came with inherent risks. “Pushing on a two-stop in response to a quick three-stopper can lead to unpredictable tire degradation, which we saw with Verstappen,” he explained.
McLaren’s successful navigation through the race culminated in both drivers securing strong positions, with Norris successfully fending off Verstappen’s late-race pressure. The execution of their strategy was commended as a key factor in their performance, reinforcing McLaren’s competitive stance in the 2023 season.
