Sao Paulo Grand Prix: Antonelli Aims to Upset Norris from P2
In a tight contest for supremacy in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli expressed his frustration at again having to challenge championship leader Lando Norris from the front row. The two Mercedes drivers locked in front positions during qualifying, with Antonelli securing P2 just behind Norris, replicating the Sprint race results from Saturday.
Norris clinched the Sprint victory, fending off late pressure from Oscar Piastri, who demonstrated improved pace in the second half. Antonelli, while pleased with his qualifying performance, acknowledged the challenge of starting behind Norris. “To be fair, I’m a bit annoyed I’m behind him again,” Antonelli admitted. He noted the difficulty of qualifying due to wind conditions but managed a satisfactory lap on his last attempt.
Looking ahead to the race on Sunday, Antonelli stressed the importance of a strong start: “Starting P2 tomorrow… it’s going to be important to get a good start and try to set a good pace.” Despite having just one podium this season, he remains optimistic about his chances for victory, especially with favorable weather expected—an advantage for Mercedes.
“Our pace this morning was really strong,” Antonelli commented, emphasizing that the cooler temperatures could benefit his performance. He recognized the critical role of track position in previous races and aims to hold his position at the start, stating, “We need something exceptional,” to compete effectively against Norris.
With the constructors’ championship also on his radar, Antonelli highlighted the strategic importance of outpacing Ferrari, as Mercedes currently leads the standings by six points, followed closely by Red Bull. “It’s a massive opportunity… that’s the goal,” he noted, underscoring his commitment to maximizing his result for the team’s championship aspirations.
As the Sao Paulo Grand Prix approaches, all eyes are on Antonelli’s performance as he seeks not only individual success but also a significant contribution to Mercedes’ championship lead.
