Imola GP Report: Andrea Kimi Antonelli Faces Challenges in Home Race

Imola, Italy — Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli experienced a challenging debut on home soil at the Imola Grand Prix, marking a disappointing chapter in his first season in Formula 1. The 18-year-old, hailing from Bologna, struggled with car confidence during the race weekend, culminating in a retirement due to a throttle issue.

On Saturday, Antonelli’s difficulties were apparent as he contended with excessive tire overheating during the race. Despite initially holding off Lewis Hamilton, he ultimately did not finish the race, while teammate George Russell managed to salvage a seventh-place finish.

The atmosphere surrounding the event was electric, as Antonelli celebrated Bologna FC’s domestic cup success and welcomed classmates to the paddock. However, he admitted that the heightened attention took a toll on his performance. "I think the weekend was probably the worst in terms of performance," Antonelli stated. "I didn’t manage my energy well, which compromised my performance on track."

Looking ahead, Antonelli acknowledged the need for better self-management, recognizing that the pressures of a Formula 1 weekend can be overwhelming. "I need to learn to say no and take a bit more time for myself," he added.

Mercedes team executive Bradley Lord emphasized the priority of performance over hype. "We’ve seen Kimi focused, but experiencing all this for the first time is a new phenomenon," Lord remarked. "It’s a learning experience, and we’ll adapt for the next race in Monaco to optimize his performance."

As the team reflects on the lessons from Imola, both Antonelli and Mercedes are poised to regroup ahead of the Monaco GP, a crucial event in the rookie’s burgeoning career.
