Andrea Kimi Antonelli Receives Grid Penalty Following Austrian GP Incident
Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been penalized with a three-place grid drop for the upcoming Formula 1 British Grand Prix after his collision with Max Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix. The incident occurred on the opening lap when Antonelli locked his rear tires entering Turn 3 and hit Verstappen, resulting in both drivers retiring from the race.
The stewards reviewed the incident and determined that Antonelli was entirely at fault. In a report, they stated, "The driver of car 12 (Kimi Antonelli) locked up the rear brakes into Turn 3 and collided with car 1.” Antonelli admitted to making a mistake but cited the need to avoid a collision with Liam Lawson’s car ahead, which contributed to his loss of control.
As a consequence of the incident, Antonelli received two penalty points on his license and will begin the race at Silverstone from the third grid position down.
Verstappen, taking the incident in stride, expressed empathy for the young driver. He remarked, "Every driver has made a mistake like that in their careers… Kimi is a very big talent, so he learns from that and that’s all fine."
This incident highlights the high-stakes nature of Formula 1, where every decision in a split second can have significant repercussions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining composure under pressure.
