Aston Martin’s Technical Vision Under Adrian Newey
Silverstone, UK — Adrian Newey, the newly appointed Managing Technical Partner at Aston Martin, is optimistic about the opportunities ahead but emphasizes the need to bolster the team’s aerodynamics department to fulfill its potential. He joined Aston Martin on March 3, 2023, as part of a strategic initiative to prepare the team for the 2026 regulations cycle.
After a promising start to the 2023 season, Aston Martin experienced a downturn, with the recent Miami Grand Prix marking a low point in their performance. Despite this, the team continues to attract top talent and invest in advanced facilities at its Silverstone headquarters.
Newey praised the team’s current dynamics, stating, “Lawrence’s vision has created a great facility – the best facility in F1 – but it is important that we now optimize how we use it. F1 is about people. Technology is essential, but it is people who drive things forward.”
He noted the necessity of enhancing personnel within the aerodynamics department, saying, “One area of our team that needs to grow is the aerodynamics department. In the context of the budget cap and staffing levels, we must focus our resources wisely.”
With a major regulation change looming, Newey highlighted the challenge of limited resources for developmental pursuits. “It’s always difficult with big regulation changes. Sometimes you have to explore paths that may not lead to fruitful results. We need to prioritize what we can achieve in the short term,” he explained.
While focusing on long-term strategies for the 2026 car, Newey acknowledged his limited role in addressing the immediate challenges of the 2025 season. “A small team is still dedicated to this year’s car, and I’ve had a few lunchtime discussions with them about possible improvements,” he noted.
With the right adjustments, Newey aims to harness Aston Martin’s capabilities and reposition the team towards competitiveness in the upcoming seasons. The integration of his expertise alongside the existing talent could be pivotal as the team navigates this transitional phase in Formula 1.
