Sauber Prepares for Major Transition Ahead of 2026 Regulations

As Formula 1 navigates a major regulatory overhaul in 2026, Sauber is poised for a significant transformation. This shift includes the team’s transition to Audi as its factory partner, with Audi responsible for engine development amidst a wave of new technical regulations aimed at enhancing competition and sustainability.

The upcoming regulations will enforce a balanced reliance on internal combustion engines and electrical components, targeting a 50-50 power distribution. Notably, the removal of the complex MGU-H energy recovery system will require all teams to utilize 100% sustainable fuels. Audi’s F1 program lead, Mattia Binotto, emphasized the challenges this transition presents, stating, “Making power units is much more complex than one might imagine. We are entering something extremely advanced, requiring a shift in engine culture, which will not be easy.”

Joining Audi in 2026 are new entrants Ford, through its partnership with Red Bull, and Cadillac, set to make its debut in 2029. Binotto expressed confidence in Audi’s path, acknowledging, "We know that 2026 will not be the year in which we’ll be at the top," hinting at a steep learning curve ahead.

Fuel choices—including e-fuels and biofuels—could define competitive dynamics, with teams leveraging different types of sustainable fuel to gain an edge. Binotto highlighted Audi’s advantage due to its parent company’s investments in sustainable fuel technology, particularly through Porsche’s initiatives in Chile.

However, the shadow of historical dominance looms large. Binotto noted speculation that Mercedes could leverage the engine regulation changes to regain a competitive edge akin to the 2014 shift that solidified their winning streak. "It’s a situation that could happen again," he warned, although he stressed that the outcome would only be clear by the season’s start.

As the Sauber team gears up for this pivotal year, they aim to move beyond their last victory under the BMW banner in 2008, with ambitions riding high for renewed success in the ever-evolving landscape of Formula 1.
