Alpine Bench Jack Doohan, Replace with Franco Colapinto
Just one-fourth into the 2025 Formula 1 season, Alpine has made headlines by benching rookie driver Jack Doohan in favor of Franco Colapinto. The decision, announced last week, was widely anticipated as Colapinto joined Alpine as a reserve driver earlier this year, following a successful stint in the Williams academy.
Colapinto is stepping into the Alpine seat after showcasing impressive speed last season, though he also accrued incidents that raised concerns over his driving consistency. Sources indicate that Doohan’s contract included a performance clause, allowing for his release after six races, a target he was unable to meet.
The juxtaposition of the two drivers highlights the challenging environment faced by newcomers in F1. "Having that pressure from race one is incredibly difficult," said Haas rookie Oliver Bearman. He criticized the decision as "very unfair," emphasizing that rookies have faced a tough learning curve with unfamiliar circuits dominating the early season.
Bearman pointed to other rookies, like Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who had the benefit of extensive testing and supportive management, contrasting sharply with Doohan’s situation. "The cars higher up the grid are easier to drive due to robust aerodynamics, which reduces errors," Bearman noted.
Fellow rookie Isack Hadjar echoed this sentiment, stating the intense expectations placed on Doohan contributed to an unhealthy environment. "Six races in, he hadn’t much time to prove himself," Hadjar commented, asserting that the Alpine was not a top-performing vehicle either.
However, two-time champion Fernando Alonso offered a different perspective. "I don’t think there is much pressure on rookies," he asserted, referring to the thorough preparatory processes now available to young drivers compared to his debut in 2001. Alonso’s recent involvement as Alpine’s executive advisor further complicates the narrative, as he plays a crucial role in team management decisions.
As the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix approaches, eyes will be on Colapinto to see if he can solidify his spot at Alpine and deliver the performance expected of a team on the cusp of competitive resurgence.
