Canadian Grand Prix Records Highest U.S. Viewership in History

ABC’s live telecast of the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday achieved an unprecedented viewership, averaging 1.9 million viewers during the race segment (2-3:45 PM ET). This marks the largest audience ever for the event on U.S. television, surpassing last year’s record of 1.8 million.

The demographic breakdown showed that 854,000 viewers were between the ages of 18-49, indicating a strong appeal among younger audiences.

Year-to-date analysis of the 2024 Formula 1 season reveals a positive trend: all but one of the nine races held thus far have seen year-over-year increases in viewership. Notably, five races—Australia, China, Monaco, Spain, and Canada—have achieved record audiences. The Monaco Grand Prix distinguished itself as having the third-largest live audience for an F1 race broadcast in the U.S.

Overall, F1 coverage across ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC averages 1.3 million viewers, representing a 6% increase over the 2024 season-to-date average and a 16% rise compared to the entire 2024 season average. Among viewers aged 18-49, the average stands at 507,000, which is up 13% over the season-to-date and 23% higher than the full season average.

The trajectory of viewership underscores the growing popularity of Formula 1 in the United States, reflecting both strategic broadcast efforts and sustained interest in the sport.
