Sainz Reflects on Ferrari Departure and New Chapter with Williams

Carlos Sainz has opened up about his unexpected transition from Ferrari to Williams, marking a significant shift in his motorsport career. In a recent podcast appearance on High Performance, Sainz described the moment he learned of his replacement by Lewis Hamilton as "completely shocking."

The revelation came in late January 2024 while Sainz was in training for the upcoming season. Initially optimistic about contract negotiations, he believed he would continue with Ferrari alongside Charles Leclerc. However, discussions had stalled since October, leaving him unsettled. “I went into the winter with the mentality that it would get sorted before race one of the 2024 season,” Sainz recalled.

His confidence was shattered with a phone call from a friend delivering the news of Hamilton’s signing. “I never felt suspicious; I always believed we were moving forward. Suddenly I was out of Ferrari. What am I going to do now?” Sainz reflected.

Despite the abrupt change, he displayed resilience, finishing fifth in the drivers’ standings in the previous season—66 points behind Leclerc, who secured third. The shock of his departure fueled his determination. “It took me a week to accept it. This gave me a kick… it made me a better athlete and driver.”

As Sainz integrates into his new role at Williams, he joins Alex Albon as the team seeks to build on previous performances. His experiences at Ferrari will likely influence his approach as he aims to turn his fortunes around in a new environment.
