Carlos Sainz Evaluates Williams’ Championship Prospects

In a recent interview with Motorsport.com, Carlos Sainz shared insights into Williams’ path forward, emphasizing the team’s potential under the leadership of James Vowles. The Spanish driver, who joined Williams in 2025 after four seasons with Ferrari, believes the team is not yet equipped to compete for championships in 2026 but is optimistic about the progress being made.

"I don’t think we’ll be ready next year," Sainz stated, reflecting on the challenges of returning Williams to the front of the grid. "It would be fantastic to take another step forward, but my time at Ferrari taught me that being competitive is a different challenge from actually beating the frontrunners."

Despite these challenges, Sainz noted positive developments in the team’s performance during the current season. Williams has managed to peak with qualifying performances that put them on par with Mercedes and Ferrari, marking a significant improvement over previous years. As of now, the team occupies fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship with 54 points, surpassing their total from the prior season.

Sainz highlighted the complexity of team growth beyond car performance, stating, "The whole organisation has to grow. I believe we’ll get there. Accepting some mistakes this season is part of the process, as we don’t yet have a car capable of fighting for the biggest goals."

His move to Williams came after Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected transition to Ferrari, and Sainz drew parallels between his new team and McLaren, where he saw potential for growth during his tenure.

Reflecting on his early days with McLaren, Sainz remarked, "At Williams, I found capable people across the board," suggesting a strong foundation for future development.

With clear aspirations and promising performances already visible this season, the Williams team, led by Vowles, appears poised for a future renaissance in Formula 1.
