Austrian GP: Williams Faces Disastrous Double DNF
Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon both experienced catastrophic failures at the Austrian Grand Prix, marking a challenging weekend for Williams Racing. Sainz, starting from 19th on the grid due to damage and brake troubles, failed to complete a lap before retiring in the pit lane.
During qualifying, Sainz reported significant damage to the FW47’s floor and persistent brake issues, stating, “The car was braking from behind when I started the engine,” which hindered his ability to move at the formation lap. Despite managing to reset and briefly accelerate, a brake fire ended his race before the first lap could commence.
“We have to see if there is some kind of relationship between yesterday and today,” Sainz remarked post-race, indicating the need for further investigation into the car’s problems. Williams’ team principal, James Vowles, echoed this sentiment, describing the day as “very disappointing.” He noted the team’s capability to challenge for a sixth-place finish, only to walk away with a double DNF due to distinct but serious issues aboard both cars.
Vowles emphasized the importance of addressing these operational and reliability shortcomings as the team looks ahead to the remaining 13 races of the season. “We need to understand these problems to improve moving forward,” he stated.
This weekend’s performance underscores persistent reliability issues for Williams, further complicating their recovery trajectory in the highly competitive midfield. As Sainz concluded, “It’s been a heavy first half of the year, but at some point, our luck will turn."
