Christian Horner Dismissed as Red Bull Racing CEO and Team Principal
Red Bull Racing has officially parted ways with CEO and team principal Christian Horner, effective immediately. The announcement came early today, marking a significant shift in leadership for the Milton Keynes-based team. Horner’s position will be filled by Laurent Mekies, who has been promoted to both CEO and team principal. Alan Permane, currently the racing director at Racing Bulls, will assume Mekies’ previous role.
Former Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle expressed his sadness over the news but acknowledged the circumstances leading to Horner’s dismissal were not entirely unexpected. “I don’t think it’s completely out of the blue, given things that are going on and the sort of problems in the team,” Brundle stated in an interview following the announcement.
Over his two-decade tenure, Horner has led Red Bull to 124 race victories, eight drivers’ championships, and six constructors’ titles. However, the team has struggled in the 2025 season, currently sitting fourth in the constructors’ standings.
Factors contributing to Horner’s dismissal include ongoing performance issues and speculation regarding star driver Max Verstappen considering a move to Mercedes, armed with a reported exit clause in his contract. Additionally, the team has faced challenges in finding a suitable teammate for Verstappen, who can fully leverage the car’s capabilities.
In early 2024, Horner faced allegations of inappropriate behavior towards a female employee but was cleared following an investigation by Red Bull GmbH.
As Red Bull transitions to new leadership, the repercussions of this decision may shape the future dynamics of both the team and the championship landscape.
