Franco Colapinto Poised to Extend Stint with Alpine F1

Franco Colapinto is set to continue his role with the Alpine Formula 1 team beyond his initial five-race contract, following the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend. Currently replacing Jack Doohan, who was demoted after the Miami GP, Colapinto’s future with Alpine remains contingent on his performance.

Originally signed from Williams for a short-term evaluation alongside Pierre Gasly, Colapinto’s progress has been monitored closely by team leader Flavio Briatore. Despite recent struggles to replicate his prior form, including a stronger qualifying display in Montreal where he reached Q2, the Argentine is expected to remain in his seat for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next week and possibly beyond.

"Canada was definitely a good step. We’ve been working hard to understand the setup," Colapinto stated during his Thursday press conference in Austria. "Generally, I’ve been feeling better and more connected with the car."

While Colapinto’s performance thus far hasn’t shown a significant improvement over Doohan, alternatives are limited. Briatore appears hesitant to restart the evaluation process, considering the overall performance of the car as a larger issue. Notably, Colapinto’s strong commercial backing from Argentina may bolster his position as the team assesses its options leading up to the critical 2026 regulations.

Silverstone holds particular significance for Colapinto, as it marked his first F1 outing last year during a challenging FP1 session in wet conditions. "Driving at Silverstone is easier when you’ve been there before in an F1 car. It’s a great, high-speed track, and I love it,” he remarked.

Colapinto’s future at Alpine will be evaluated on a race-by-race basis, with upcoming performances crucial as the team navigates its path amidst a competitive midfield.
