Colapinto Penalized Following Qualifying Crash at Imola
IMOLA, Italy – Franco Colapinto incurred a one-place grid penalty for the F1 Imola Grand Prix, following a breach of protocol during qualifying. The Argentine driver, making his debut for Alpine, received the penalty after incorrectly entering the fast lane of the pitlane during a red flag incident caused by Yuki Tsunoda’s high-speed crash.
According to the FIA stewards’ report, Colapinto misinterpreted instructions from his team, resulting in an unauthorized entry before the restart time was confirmed. “Once this was done, it was too late to reverse course,” noted the report.
Colapinto subsequently crashed during qualifying, expressing regret over the incident. “It’s just a pity—a very costly mistake,” he stated. “I enjoyed working with the team and I’m learning a lot about the car with every lap.”
Starting in 16th place, Colapinto underwent medical checks and was cleared to race. He acknowledged his early laps were conservative but felt there was significant potential for improvement. “I’m sure we’ll come back stronger,” he asserted, emphasizing his commitment to adapt to the car’s performance.
The team has indicated that preparations are underway to ensure a strong recovery in the race.
Colapinto’s early challenges highlight the pressures faced by rookie drivers in the highly competitive world of Formula 1, particularly as they adjust to new machinery and racing conditions.
