Hulkenberg Secures First Podium in Rain-Soaked British GP

Nico Hulkenberg achieved a historic milestone at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, securing his first Formula 1 podium after 239 races. The Sauber driver, starting from the back row, delivered a flawless performance against challenging wet conditions, finishing third behind McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Hulkenberg’s achievement drew significant attention within the Sauber hospitality suite, where celebrations included music and champagne. Team principal Jonathan Wheatley recognized the significance of the podium, remarking, “Nico drove an outstanding race today. One of the best I’ve seen at Silverstone.”

This podium marked Sauber’s first since 2012 and underscored the team’s remarkable turnaround following a disappointing 2024 season where they scored just four points. Their recent upgrades and strategic decisions have moved them up to sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, a position few anticipated at the season’s start.

Wheatley emphasized the growing momentum, stating, “People start believing in us,” a sentiment echoed by the team’s improved performance in recent races, including a double-points finish in Austria. He lauded Hulkenberg’s talent and expressed confidence in his ability to secure more podiums, saying, “I have no doubt he can win a race.”

Reflecting on the race, Wheatley praised the team’s strategic decisions, including tire selections, which he credited with enhancing their competitive edge under difficult weather conditions. The positive trajectory and newfound belief within the team could signify a pivotal moment in Sauber’s evolution as it prepares to become the works Audi squad next season.

As the motorsport community rallies around Hulkenberg’s long-awaited success, the Sauber team looks ahead to building on this momentum for the remainder of the 2025 season.
