Kvyat Optimistic Despite Red Bull’s Early Struggles
In a recent analysis, former Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat reaffirmed his belief that Red Bull Racing possesses the speed to challenge championship leaders McLaren this season. Currently positioned third in the constructors’ standings, Red Bull trails McLaren by 148 points and has secured just two victories compared to McLaren’s five.
Kvyat pointed to a notable performance gap, particularly in the Bahrain Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen finished 34.3 seconds behind winner Oscar Piastri. Despite the early season deficits, Kvyat maintains that when the RB21 is set up correctly, Red Bull is capable of competing closely with McLaren.
“The main issue is that the car is too ‘peaky’,” Kvyat stated during the F1 Nation podcast following the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. He emphasized that the operational window for optimal performance is narrow, requiring both the engineering team and drivers to navigate setup challenges effectively.
“If you slide slightly away from this window, the consequences are huge and you lose a lot of lap time,” Kvyat added. He also suggested that Red Bull’s lack of pressure may provide an edge in upcoming races, enabling them to be more aggressive on-track.
Highlighting the competitive nuances, Kvyat noted that the close qualifying margins, such as the half-tenth gap in Imola, indicate potential parity between the teams in low-degradation race conditions. “Red Bull can definitely be there with McLaren, especially if McLaren is behind them,” he remarked, suggesting that Red Bull could capitalize on McLaren’s inexperience with sustained dominance.
Overall, while Red Bull faces significant obstacles, Kvyat’s insights demonstrate a steadfast belief in the team’s capabilities as they aim to close the gap in the constructor’s championship.
