Red Bull Racing Faces Criticism Over Driver Line-Up
October 3, 2023 — Formula 1 commentator David Croft has expressed concerns regarding Red Bull Racing’s current driver line-up, suggesting that the team may lack the necessary talent to contend for the constructors’ title this season. This remark follows the team’s recent decision to replace rookie Liam Lawson with Yuki Tsunoda, who has since recorded three top-10 finishes.
Red Bull finds itself third in the Constructors’ Championship standings, trailing leaders McLaren by a substantial 176 points after just eight races. Croft emphasized that to remain competitive, particularly alongside four-time champion Max Verstappen, Red Bull needs a co-driver of superior caliber.
In a recent episode of the Sky Sports F1 Show podcast, Croft stated, “Yuki is the most experienced Japanese driver in Formula 1 history, but he’s not yet at the level of a Lando Norris or George Russell. While he is a good driver, the question remains if he can consistently compete for race wins.”
Croft criticized the team’s selection strategy, suggesting they missed the opportunity to sign Carlos Sainz, who is widely regarded as a capable contender. “If they want to win a constructors’ championship, they should secure a driver who is already proven,” he remarked.
Despite the ongoing upheaval, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has reaffirmed that the primary objective remains the drivers’ championship. During a recent interview, he stated, “To challenge McLaren effectively in the constructors, we need both cars scoring big points. However, our priority is still on maximizing Max’s performance, especially as we approach the critical stages of the season.”
As the 2023 season progresses, Red Bull must navigate these challenges swiftly to regain its place at the forefront of Formula 1, focusing on enhancing its driver line-up for future success.
