Sauber Celebrates Milestone at 600th Grand Prix, Beats Zehnder Set for Retirement Transition

In a landmark moment for the Sauber F1 Team, the organization marked its 600th Grand Prix during the recent event in Imola. Since its inception in 1993, the team has navigated a tumultuous journey through various manufacturer partnerships and independent status, culminating in its upcoming transition to being the Audi works team in 2024.

A Veteran’s Farewell

Long-serving sporting manager Beat Zehnder will bring his remarkable streak of 601 consecutive races to an end after the Monaco Grand Prix. Zehnder, who has played a pivotal role throughout Sauber’s history, reflects on both triumphant moments such as Roberto Kubica’s 2008 win at the Canadian Grand Prix and challenging times that nearly led the team to bankruptcy.

"Peter Sauber kept the team alive with his down-to-earth values and commitment," Zehnder explained, emphasizing the importance of proper leadership in difficult times.

A New Chapter Awaits

Moving forward, Zehnder is set to take on a new role as Director of Signature Programmes and Operations, focusing on enhancing team infrastructure and developing a test squad. His departure follows 33 years in the paddock, an impressive tenure characterized by significant contributions to the team’s development and successes.

Reflecting on the challenges he faced, Zehnder described the dark periods for the sport in 1994, particularly the accidents involving Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at Imola. "It was a horrible time, but we learned to adapt and innovate," he noted, recalling the team’s early adoption of high cockpit walls for improved safety.

Future Aspirations

As Sauber prepares for its next chapter, Zehnder expressed confidence in the team’s roadmap under Audi. "We’re here to win races—not next year, but we have a clear vision," he stated. The organization plans to expand its workforce significantly, with a recruitment drive for an additional 200 employees over the next 18 months.

With Zehnder’s imminent transition from the racetrack, the focus shifts to cultivating the next generation of talent and pursuing competitive excellence in Formula 1’s ever-evolving landscape.
