2026 Formula 1 Calendar Update: Azerbaijan Grand Prix Rescheduled

The Formula 1 calendar for 2026 has undergone a significant adjustment, with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix now set for Saturday, September 26. This change was made to honor Azerbaijan Remembrance Day, which falls on September 27. As a result, the Baku event will retain its position as the 17th race in a 24-race lineup but has shifted back a week from its 2025 schedule.

F1 representatives stated, “All the F1 teams have been informed of this change,” highlighting the collaborative efforts with the Azerbaijan promoter and local government. Consequently, the race weekend will commence with media day on Wednesday, September 23, instead of the traditional Thursday. The first two practice sessions are scheduled for Thursday, with FP3 and qualifying on Friday, September 25.

Pre-Season Testing Scheduled

In conjunction with the calendar adjustments, F1 has confirmed three pre-season tests designed to prepare teams for the new technical regulations debuting in 2026. A five-day private test will take place at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from January 26-30. This testing format mirrors the strategy employed in 2022 at the onset of the ground-effect era.

The subsequent tests are set in Bahrain for February 11-13 and February 18-20, as reported by Autosport.

Major Regulation Overhaul

The upcoming season will witness the most substantial regulatory changes in Formula 1’s history. New chassis and power unit regulations aim to produce smaller, lighter cars featuring active aerodynamics to enhance performance on straightaways. These changes include increased electrical power due to the removal of the MGU-H and the introduction of sustainable fuels.

While the shift has sparked some controversy—most notably calls to revert to a V10 power unit—the majority of stakeholders are preparing for the transition. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc expressed reservations about the driving experience in simulations, stating the 2026 car “is not the most enjoyable race car I’ve driven.” In contrast, designer Adrian Newey has communicated a positive outlook on the new regulations.

The season will kick off with the Australian Grand Prix on March 8, 2026, and conclude at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on December 6.
