FIA and F1 Implement New Power Unit Regulations Ahead of 2026 Season

In a significant move ahead of the 2026 season, Formula 1 and the FIA announced enhanced measures to support power unit manufacturers facing performance challenges under the new regulations. This decision was confirmed during a recent World Motor Sport Council meeting.

The upcoming regulations introduce complex power units that place increased emphasis on battery and hybrid systems, influencing the competitive landscape. Notably, Audi will make its debut, Honda is returning after a hiatus, and Ford will collaborate with Red Bull Powertrains. Cadillac is also poised to develop its power unit for the 2029 season, setting the stage for varied initial performance levels among teams.

Key among the approved changes is the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) concept. This initiative aims to offer manufacturers trailing in performance enhanced development opportunities. The FIA explained that performance would be continuously assessed, with ADUO allocations considered after the sixth, twelfth, and eighteenth races. Specific measures include:

  • Opportunities for additional homologation changes.
  • Financial relief from cost caps.
  • Increased development hours on power unit test benches.

Moreover, the Council instituted provisions for cost cap relief in scenarios where manufacturers encounter serious reliability issues that could impact their competitiveness.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of collaboration between the FIA and Formula 1 to shape the sport’s future positively. He remarked, “Together we have the chance to make history,” focusing on safety, the support of young drivers, and the expansive growth of the sport.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali echoed these sentiments, praising the cooperative efforts between the FIA and F1 in progressing towards a sustainable governance framework that benefits all stakeholders.

This proactive stance from the FIA and F1 highlights a commitment to innovation and competitiveness as the sport undergoes significant regulatory changes.
