Norris Claims Pole at Austrian Grand Prix

Lando Norris secured pole position for the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, demonstrating impressive dominance throughout the weekend. The McLaren driver, who skipped FP1, established a commanding presence by leading every session thereafter, culminating in a blistering qualifying lap of 1:03.971—a margin that marks the largest pole gap of the season.

Norris’ performance overshadowed his rivals, although a late yellow flag temporarily halted momentum in Q3. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari claimed second place, successfully splitting the McLaren drivers. Championship leader Oscar Piastri will start third, following a spun-out Pierre Gasly from Alpine that disrupted several final attempts to improve lap times.

Max Verstappen, the reigning champion and previous five-time Austrian pole sitter, will line up seventh. Lewis Hamilton will start fourth in the second Ferrari, with George Russell in fifth and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson impressively qualifying sixth.

Rookie Gabriel Bortoleto from Sauber achieved his best qualifying result, lining up alongside Verstappen in eighth. Andrea Kimi Antonelli qualified ninth, while Gasly’s spin pushed him down to tenth.

Q2 was marred by a red flag due to a trackside fire, exacerbating pressure as 15 drivers vied for fast laps upon resuming. Notable eliminations included Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, Isack Hadjar, Franco Colapinto, and Oliver Bearman, who will start 11th to 15th, respectively.

In a challenging outing for Yuki Tsunoda, he was knocked out in Q1, starting 18th, alongside Carlos Sainz and Nico Hülkenberg at the back of the grid. Tsunoda’s elimination was particularly disappointing, as he was only 0.250 seconds off his teammate Verstappen’s pace.
