George Russell Top of Timesheet in Opening Practice at Red Bull Ring

George Russell set the fastest time during the opening practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix, clocking a 1:05.542 in his Mercedes. This performance follows his victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, positioning him ahead of championship rival Max Verstappen by 0.065 seconds.

The session was characterized by unpredictable weather, with light rain reported towards the end, complicating efforts to improve lap times. As a result, no drivers were able to challenge Russell’s lead in the closing moments.

Championship leader Oscar Piastri secured third place, while McLaren teammate Lando Norris observed from the pit wall as rookie Alex Dunne made his F1 debut, finishing fourth and just 0.069 seconds behind Piastri. Dunne expressed his excitement over the team radio, stating, “A massive thank you for making a little boy’s dream come true.”

Ferrari’s Dino Beganovic, filling in for Charles Leclerc, faced a challenging session, ending up in 18th place. Lewis Hamilton also struggled with an early gearbox issue and finished ninth overall. Fernando Alonso experienced difficulties as well, describing his outlap as the “worst we could do” after spinning his Aston Martin.

Notable performances included Pierre Gasly in fifth for Alpine, and Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto impressing in sixth. The Williams duo of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz followed closely, while Isack Hadjar rounded out the top ten.
