Magnus Carlsen Critiques Formula 1 During Norway Chess 2025
Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has stirred controversy by labeling Formula 1 as "the most boring sport imaginable" during a press conference following his victory over reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament on May 26, 2025.
Carlsen’s candid remarks, delivered after a commanding performance in the tournament, highlighted his view that F1 racing is primarily about "driving around in a circle for a long time." He acknowledged that while the race start is thrilling due to the sheer power of the cars, the ensuing laps do not hold substantial excitement for the viewers.
"Most people don’t really follow what’s going on," Carlsen said, pointing to the influence of personalities and marketing over the racing itself. He indicated that the interest in F1 stems more from celebrity culture than from the racing dynamics that typically engage fans in other sports.
The timing of Carlsen’s comments coincided with the aftermath of the Monaco Grand Prix, a race often criticized for its processional nature. This year, a two-stop strategy was implemented to enhance the competition but led to frustration among viewers, as some teams employed drivers as "sacrificial lambs" to create advantageous pit stop gaps.
Former driver and Sky Sports F1 commentator Martin Brundle commented on the changes, expressing surprise that the rules did not mandate an earlier pit stop for teams at the back of the grid, which would have encouraged more competitive racing. “It was clear that some teams could effectively cycle through their stops early with nothing much to lose,” Brundle noted. He pointed out that the strategy allowed front-running teams to delay their stops, adding to the frustration for drivers caught behind slower vehicles.
As the F1 community reacts to Carlsen’s comments, the focus shifts to how racing organizations will address the ongoing challenges to maintain viewer engagement and enhance the overall spectacle of the sport.
