British Grand Prix: Hamilton Struggles with Wet Conditions, Ferrari Faces Strategic Blunders

Silverstone, UK – Lewis Hamilton faced significant challenges during the wet conditions of the British Grand Prix, describing the 2023 Ferrari as the most difficult car he has driven in the rain. Despite early pressure on race leader Lando Norris, Hamilton finished fourth, unable to close the gap to Nico Hulkenberg.

Ferrari had optimistic prospects following a promising qualifying session, where Hamilton secured fifth and teammate Charles Leclerc sixth. However, the team’s race strategy faltered amidst the shifting conditions.

“It was a difficult day for everybody,” Hamilton noted. “Not the result I was hoping for, but I still got some points. This car is unbelievably tricky to drive in these conditions.”

The race saw Hamilton briefly challenge Norris, particularly at Turn 15, but tire degradation hampered his performance. Reflecting on his experience, he emphasized the importance of data collection for the team’s development, indicating a need for improvements in future car designs.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur acknowledged the strategic missteps, stating, “It was probably one lap too early to fit slicks,” after the team’s decision cost time early in the race. He highlighted the complexities of real-time decision-making, particularly after losing GPS data on Hamilton’s car, which left the team without critical positioning information.

The combination of Hamilton’s struggle with the car’s wet performance and Ferrari’s strategic miscalculations led to a disappointing outcome, highlighting areas for improvement as the season progresses.
