FIA Enhances Transparency with Release of Stewarding Guidelines

In a significant step aimed at increasing transparency in Formula 1, the FIA has released important guidelines on stewarding practices, marking the first time this information has been made public.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem Takes Center Stage

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced the publication, which aims to address ongoing criticism of stewarding decisions. He stated, “To demonstrate the rigour with which they pursue their role, we are today publishing the Penalty and Driving Standards Guidelines that assist them with their decisions. This will give fans and members of the media a much deeper and more accurate insight into how decisions are made in Formula 1.”

Following the announcement, Carlos Sainz Sr. confirmed he would not run in the upcoming presidential election, solidifying Ben Sulayem’s position unopposed for another term.

Expansion to Other FIA Series

The FIA has indicated that these guidelines will be expanded to other championships under its jurisdiction, including the World Endurance Championship, Formula E, and the World Rally Championship. This release pattern aims to create uniformity across the governing body’s various motorsport series.

Recent Driver Penalties: Verstappen’s Case

Max Verstappen recently faced a 10-place grid penalty and three points on his superlicence for a collision with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix. The stewards clarified that the incident was not deemed to have immediate sporting consequences, allowing Verstappen to avoid more severe penalties that could have led to a race ban.

The guidelines elaborated that if the collision had been seen as reckless or intentional, it could have resulted in a more severe penalty, including a four-point superlicence infraction, which would have put Verstappen’s participation in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix at risk.

Guidelines on Overtaking and Penalties

The newly published guidelines emphasize incentivizing overtaking while also set strictures against dangerous defensive maneuvers. The document advocates a stringent application of rules in lower formulas to aid in junior driver development, reducing tolerance due to their relative lack of experience.

Upcoming Developments

As the FIA implements this level of transparency, it will be crucial for teams and drivers to adapt quickly to these published practices. The ongoing scrutiny of racing conduct and penalty enforcement may redefine competitive strategy in the approaching races.

The motorsport community, including fans and analysts, will be watching closely as further developments unfold regarding the FIA’s commitment to improved governance.
