Smedley Advocates for Verstappen at Mercedes Amidst Rumors
Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley has unequivocally stated that he would choose Max Verstappen over George Russell if he were in Mercedes’ position. This comment comes amid ongoing speculation regarding Verstappen’s future with Red Bull Racing amid performance challenges, including Adrian Newey’s recent departure and Honda’s exit.
During a recent episode of the F1 Nation podcast, Smedley commented on the decision-making dilemma facing Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. “It’s a very tough question,” he admitted. “You’ve got a four-time world champion… who can drive over and above what the car can actually deliver.” Smedley was clear in his preference: "Yeah, 100% I would. No doubt."
The backdrop to these comments includes Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull, which extends until 2028. However, with the team’s recent struggles, questions persist about his commitment to the organization. Damon Hill, the 1996 Formula 1 champion, echoed these concerns, highlighting a performance clause in Verstappen’s contract that could allow him to leave should Red Bull fail to meet expectations.
“Red Bull are fighting to retain Max Verstappen,” Hill explained. “There’s a performance clause… If they don’t give him that, then he’s free to go wherever he wants.” He suggested that a temporary break from racing could benefit Verstappen, enabling him to reassess team dynamics as new regulations come into play.
Despite Red Bull’s challenges, Verstappen currently sits third in the driver standings, trailing McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The dynamics of the driver market continue to evolve, with Russell reportedly close to re-signing with Mercedes, potentially complicating any moves for Verstappen.
In summary, Smedley’s endorsement of Verstappen serves as a reminder of the extraordinary talent the Dutch driver possesses, leaving the door open for future developments amidst an ever-changing competitive landscape.
