Las Vegas Grand Prix: Practice Insights and Qualifying Prospects
Las Vegas, NV — As teams gear up for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, practice sessions on Thursday highlighted the competitive landscape for upcoming qualifying. McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari are all in contention for pole position after a disrupted day of track running.
In FP2, Lando Norris emerged at the top of the timesheets, clocking in the fastest lap amidst red flag interruptions caused by a suspected loose manhole cover. “I think we have a better feeling in the car than what we had last year, so that’s a positive,” Norris noted, pointing to noticeable improvements compared to last season. However, limited running time meant teams couldn’t fully assess qualifying performance.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull acknowledged the need for further grip and understanding amid track evolution. “It’s just a bit difficult to understand what to do with these interruptions,” he stated. Verstappen emphasized that the cooler conditions and slippery surface in Las Vegas differ significantly from other low-downforce tracks where Red Bull has previously excelled.
Mercedes driver George Russell is cautiously optimistic about his team’s prospects after dominating the event last year. “I think we’re in the mix,” he commented, underlining the competitive nature of the field. Notably, competitors like Norris and Verstappen are delivering solid performances, with Russell admitting, “We’re there or thereabouts, but definitely not a slam dunk.”
In FP1, Charles Leclerc set the pace for Ferrari before a late stoppage cut the session short. Leclerc expressed confidence in the car’s performance but acknowledged the stiff competition: “It’s going to be tight. I hope we can build from now and be in the fight for pole.”
As teams prepare for further practice on Friday, the battle for pole position remains wide open, with McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes poised for a competitive qualifying session.
