Russell Comments on Mercedes’ Future and Verstappen Links

Montreal—George Russell addressed ongoing discussions regarding his contract with Mercedes and speculation surrounding Max Verstappen potentially joining the team. While noting that contract negotiations have been set aside, Russell emphasized that the team is prioritizing performance improvements ahead of the 2025 season.

Despite both Russell and Verstappen being linked to Mercedes seats as their current contracts expire at the end of this year, Russell expressed confidence in his standing within the team. "I know I’m going to be in Formula 1 next year. My intention and goal is to stay with Mercedes," Russell stated, aligning with team principal Toto Wolff’s intentions as well.

Verstappen, under contract with Red Bull until 2028, reportedly has a clause allowing him to exit if he is not among the top four drivers by the conclusion of the Austrian Grand Prix in 2026. Currently, he holds a 43-point lead over fifth-placed Charles Leclerc, although a recent penalty for colliding with Russell in Barcelona has raised concerns about his championship standing.

Russell acknowledged Verstappen’s talent, stating, "It’s understandable that the likes of Max have always been on the radar… He’s one of the GOATs." However, he conveyed his belief in his own merit within the team, asserting, "I feel I’ve done that time and time again."

While discussions about future contracts remain in the background, Russell’s focus remains on aiding Mercedes in enhancing performance as the team looks to return to form in the highly competitive landscape of Formula 1.
