George Russell Drives Iconic 1955 W196 at Aintree

In a nod to motorsport history, George Russell had the opportunity to drive the Mercedes-Benz W196, which clinched victory at the 1955 British Grand Prix, ahead of this year’s event at Silverstone. Sir Stirling Moss secured that win, marking a historic moment as the first English driver to triumph at the British Grand Prix.

Russell took to social media to express his appreciation for the experience, stating, “It’s an immense privilege to drive the Mercedes-Benz W196 at Aintree! This car represents so much to the Mercedes heritage.” He emphasized the significance of the moment, reflecting on Moss’s achievement: “The handling, the raw speed, and the feel of taking the W196 around Aintree felt so special.”

The event at Aintree saw Moss dominate, starting from pole position and achieving the fastest lap, while his teammates Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling finished second and third, respectively. This podium marked the last all-Mercedes-powered finish until 2014.

As the 2025 British Grand Prix approaches, Russell currently stands fourth in the drivers’ standings with 146 points, trailing championship leader Oscar Piastri by 70 points. The race weekend runs from July 4-6 at Silverstone, continuing the tradition of this historic event.
