George Russell Heads to Silverstone Amid Contract Speculation

Silverstone – George Russell made a striking entrance at the Silverstone circuit, piloting the iconic Mercedes C111, a rare prototype from the automaker’s history. One of only 17 units ever built, this mid-engine supercar debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show and served as a testbed for innovative technologies, including Wankel engines and multi-link suspension systems.

The vehicle on display is powered by a 4-rotor engine, and notably, a diesel version reached a top speed of 210 mph at the Nardo Ring in 1978—though it was never intended for production. Innovations from the C111 influenced future Mercedes road cars and reflect the manufacturer’s engineering prowess.

This weekend, Mercedes also unveiled the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, designed to showcase the brand’s direction in high-performance vehicles. Painted in Sunset Beam Orange—similar to the C111—the concept features advanced drivetrain technology, developed collaboratively by multiple divisions within Mercedes, including insights from Formula 1 experts.

Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz, emphasized the collaborative effort, stating, “The best minds in our global R&D network have contributed their extensive expertise… Together, they have developed the CONCEPT AMG GT XX.”

As Russell prepares for a pivotal weekend at his home race, uncertainty looms regarding his future with the team. Mercedes’ Team Principal, Toto Wolff, has confirmed discussions with Max Verstappen about a potential seat for the 2024 season, heightening attention on Russell’s performance.

In a recent press conference, Russell reassured, “I am loyal to Mercedes… the likelihood I’m not at Mercedes next year is exceptionally low.”

The stakes are high as Russell aims to deliver strong results amidst these speculations during a crucial phase of the Formula 1 season.
