Alex Dunne: Rising Star in F2 and F1 Debutant
Austrian GP, July 2023 – Eighteen-year-old Alex Dunne, a graduate of McLaren’s junior program, has rapidly risen through the ranks of motorsport in just a year. The Irishman emerged from a challenging F3 season to take command in the F2 standings while making his Formula 1 debut with McLaren at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Dunne, the 2022 British F4 champion, reflected on his rapid ascent: "Things have happened pretty quickly. I’m very happy with the opportunities McLaren have given me and with how F2 is going." The teenager regained his F2 championship lead in Barcelona after overcoming a setback in Monaco that resulted in an 11-car pile-up, prompting online backlash.
During the Austrian GP FP1, Dunne showcased his growing experience, setting the fourth-fastest time. Team principal Andrea Stella praised his performance as "nothing short of impressive." Dunne expressed excitement about the moment, noting, "It was very special to have the stands full of fans while I was on track."
Dunne detailed the differences between F2 and F1: "The step up wasn’t actually that difficult… the F1 car has so much grip, it feels like it has unlimited capabilities." He emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, “The more integrated I’ve been [with McLaren], the more I’ve learned as a driver.”
Despite strong ties with McLaren, the pathway to a full-time F1 seat remains unclear, given the long-term contracts of drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Dunne also serves as a reserve driver for McLaren in Formula E but faces uncertainty as the team plans to exit the series post-season.
As he continues to vie for the F2 title, Dunne remains focused on his immediate goals. "If I continue to do a good job, then hopefully the opportunity in F1 will come," he affirmed, signaling his commitment to excel both on and off the track.
