Haas Seeks FIA Clarification After Bearman Disqualification in Qualifying
Haas F1 Team has formally requested written clarification from the FIA following the disqualification of driver Oliver Bearman during the first qualifying session of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Bearman had initially recorded a lap time that would have seen him progress to Q2, but this was ruled invalid due to a red flag incident.
The red flag was issued for Franco Colapinto’s crash, which occurred just as Bearman crossed the finish line. The FIA cited that Bearman’s timing—16:32 and 20.9 seconds—occurred after the red flag was deployed at 16:32 and 17.6 seconds. As a result, the stewards deemed his lap time should be erased from the record.
Haas contested this ruling, asserting that Bearman had completed his lap prior to the red flag, as substantiated by live timing data. Haas’s statement emphasized their desire for a thorough review of the decision-making process, stating, “We have subsequently asked for further written clarification… Upon review, we will be more informed to comment.”
Bearman expressed his frustration with the decision, labeling it "totally unfair." He indicated that the red flag signal on his dashboard appeared after he had crossed the line, and he referred to video evidence supporting his case. “I feel like once they make a decision…even if it’s clearly wrong, they’re not going to turn back on it,” he stated.
The FIA, responding to the situation, confirmed that further examination of timing data and consultation among stewards was necessary to ensure that the correct drivers advanced to Qualifying Two, emphasizing the integrity of the qualifying process.
Haas awaits the FIA’s response as the team reviews the implications of this incident for future races.
