Leclerc Takes Pole as Hamilton Exits Early in Hungarian GP Qualifying

Charles Leclerc achieved a significant milestone for Ferrari by securing pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking the team’s first of the season. Leclerc’s time outpaced both McLaren drivers, positioning him ahead for the race. However, Lewis Hamilton faced disappointment, exiting qualifying in Q2 after narrowly missing the cut-off by just 0.015 seconds.

Hamilton recorded a lap time 0.247 seconds slower than Leclerc in Q2 and expressed frustration over his performance, labeling himself “absolutely useless” in a post-session interview. “It’s just me every time,” he stated, further adding that the team had performed well, hinting at a need for personal improvement.

In contrast, Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, offered a more measured perspective on the session’s challenges. Acknowledging the difficulties posed by rapidly changing track conditions—characterized by light rain and increased wind during Q2—Vasseur noted, “It was a very difficult one,” but emphasized the team’s ability to regroup and deliver in Q3.

Vasseur pointed out the critical margins in qualifying, stating, “You don’t have to compare P1 and P12, you have to compare one tenth in Q2,” underscoring the fine line between success and failure in qualifying. He highlighted the team’s need for collective improvement to avoid similar situations in future sessions, particularly referencing the earlier use of a second set of tires in Q1 as a contributing factor to their difficulties.

As the grid prepares for the race, Ferrari’s pole position sets a promising tone, while Hamilton and Mercedes must regroup to overcome their recent qualifying struggles.
