Location: Silverstone Circuit

Lewis Hamilton set a competitive pace in the opening practice session for the British Grand Prix, clocking a lap time of 1:26.892 in his first appearance for Ferrari at home. This time edged out McLaren’s Lando Norris by a mere 0.023 seconds, while Oscar Piastri completed a strong showing for McLaren, finishing third, 0.127 seconds off Hamilton’s benchmark.

The McLaren team brought significant upgrades for the MCL39, now predominantly chrome in color, but their effectiveness in the hot Silverstone conditions—track temperature at 105°F and ambient at 75°F—remains to be fully evaluated.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took fourth place, registering a time 0.203 seconds slower than Hamilton, displaying an uncertain handling of the new softer tire compound while Mercedes’ George Russell rounded out the top five, 0.271 seconds behind.

Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar surprised many with a sixth-place finish, pushing his teammate Liam Lawson to eighth. Both drivers were notably fast early in the session, with Hadjar concluding the hour just 0.325 seconds off Hamilton’s time. Williams’ Alex Albon occupied seventh.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen encountered difficulties throughout the session, finishing in tenth place and 0.540 seconds off the pace due to understeer in slow corners coupled with oversteer in high-speed sections.

Fernando Alonso secured 11th position, outperforming teammate Lance Stroll, who was 12th. Notably, Alonso tested Aston Martin’s latest upgrades, while both cars are set to feature the upgrades in later sessions.

Carlos Sainz finished 13th after briefly going off track and requiring repairs, which were later deemed unnecessary by the team. Red Bull junior driver Arvid Lindblad, making his FP1 debut in Yuki Tsunoda’s place, finished 14th, 1.066 seconds off the lead.

Esteban Ocon faced brake issues, placing him 15th, followed closely by Franco Colapinto in 16th. Alpine junior Paul Aron stepped in for Nico Hulkenberg in Sauber’s car, finishing 17th, 1.25 seconds off the pace.

Other notable mentions include Oliver Bearman in 18th, Pierre Gasly, who experienced a spin at Copse, and Gabriel Bortoleto, who had multiple spins during the session.

The session concluded with clear indications of competitive dynamics heading into the rest of the weekend, as teams analyze their strategies and performance gains from recent upgrades.
