Lewis Hamilton’s Father Takes Official Role with FIA’s Young Driver Programme

Lewis Hamilton’s father, Anthony Hamilton, is set to assume an official position with the FIA, focusing on the organization’s Young Driver Development Pathway. Initially serving in an advisory capacity for the past 18 months, Anthony’s advancements were confirmed by The Times and corroborated by Autosport ahead of the FIA conference in Macau next month.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem praised Hamilton’s contributions, highlighting the need to streamline the transition for young drivers from grassroots to professional motorsport. This initiative forms part of the FIA’s broader efforts to enhance driver development.

Despite Anthony Hamilton’s new role, there is no indication that it impacts his son Lewis’s perspective on Ben Sulayem’s governance. The seven-time World Champion, along with other drivers, has previously expressed concerns regarding the FIA’s handling of issues, including comments made by Ben Sulayem likening F1 drivers to "rappers," which prompted accusations of racial insensitivity.

Recently, Ben Sulayem has softened the penalties associated with swearing over team radios, a contentious topic among current drivers. George Russell, speaking on the recent changes, noted a lack of communication from FIA leadership, stating, “It seems more challenging than it should be.” Similarly, Lewis Hamilton described the situation as “a bit of a mess,” indicating that substantial reform is necessary within the organization.

As Ben Sulayem prepares for re-election later this year, speculation arises over possible challengers, including Carlos Sainz Sr., who is reportedly considering a candidacy after discussions with influential figures in the motorsport community. Both Sainz and his son have expressed confidence that any potential conflicts of interest can be managed.

This development marks a significant step for the FIA as it seeks to bolster its support framework for emerging talent in motorsport.
