Verstappen’s Ferrari Test Sparks Controversy in F1

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen’s recent test of a Ferrari 296 GT3 at the Nurburgring has ignited discussions within the motorsports community. Leveraging a break between the F1 Miami Grand Prix and the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Verstappen—operating under the alias "Franz Hermann"—drove for Emil Frey Racing, which manages his own team in the GT World Challenge.

Verstappen’s outing not only turned heads but reportedly saw him break the lap record, raising eyebrows about the implications for driver contracts and safety protocols. His entry was quickly recognized due to the car’s striking livery bearing his name, despite its initial secrecy.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has taken a firm stance against such extracurricular racing efforts by his drivers. “No,” Komatsu stated firmly when asked if his team’s rookies, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon, could replicate Verstappen’s actions. He emphasized the difference in their career stages, pointing out, “Max is a multiple world champion; Oli is a rookie.”

Komatsu further elaborated on the risks involved, saying, “They need to look after their physical and mental condition,” highlighting that F1 drivers are already occupied with a demanding racing schedule and simulator work.

Verstappen himself noted the complexities of racing slower cars, asserting, “It’s definitely more dangerous for me to sit in a slower car,” which showcases the critical line between competitive spirit and safety.

The changing landscape of motorsports sees today’s F1 drivers tightly bound by contracts that often limit their participation in other racing categories. While some have managed to negotiate special permissions—such as Fernando Alonso’s exemption for the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix to race in the Indy 500—many face restrictions that were less common in previous decades.

As the F1 calendar grows and driver professionalism increases, the environment for extracurricular activities becomes more complicated, leaving behind a legacy of a different era of competition.
