Derek Warwick Suspended as Steward for Canadian Grand Prix
Montreal, Canada – Derek Warwick, a former Formula 1 driver and race steward, has been suspended from officiating duties for the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix due to controversial media remarks. Warwick, aged 70 and a four-time Grand Prix podium finisher, was set to serve as a steward but has been replaced by former driver Enrique Bernoldi.
The decision stems from comments Warwick made in interviews with a gambling firm, which criticized current F1 drivers including Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda. The FIA released a statement confirming the suspension, stating: “Following recent unauthorized media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.” It added that Warwick has acknowledged his "ill-advised" comments and has apologized. He is expected to resume his stewarding role at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Warwick’s suspension marks the second incident this season involving stewards providing media statements that breach FIA guidelines. Earlier this year, Johnny Herbert was also removed from consideration for stewards’ roles after making comments linked to a betting company’s involvement.
Warwick, who notably won the 1992 Le Mans 24 Hours and was crowned World Sportscar Champion the same year, is currently facing scrutiny while the FIA continues to enforce its standards for steward conduct.
