Christian Horner Dismissed as Red Bull F1 Team Principal After Two Decades
In a surprising move, Christian Horner has been dismissed from his role as the CEO and team principal of Red Bull Racing. Horner’s departure, announced by the team’s Austrian leadership, comes after a challenging 18-month period marked by a decline in competitiveness.
Over his 20-year tenure, Horner guided Red Bull to six Constructors’ Championships and eight Drivers’ Championships, primarily with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen at the wheel.
During a brief address to employees, Horner expressed his shock at the decision and gratitude for the team’s support. "I will still remain employed by the company, but operationally, the baton will be handed over," he stated. He acknowledged the evolution of Red Bull from its humble beginnings to a leading powerhouse in Formula 1.
Laurent Mekies, previously the team principal of Red Bull sister team Racing Bulls, will assume Horner’s responsibilities immediately. Mekies emphasized his excitement about leading such a successful team, stating, "It’s an honor to be part of this group of brilliant people…Together we will achieve great results."
Key leadership changes accompany Horner’s exit, with significant departures among team members, including marketing director Oliver Hughes and communications director Paul Smith.
Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff acknowledged Horner’s contributions, noting, "With his tireless commitment and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful teams in Formula 1."
This restructuring within Red Bull Racing raises questions about the future of star driver Max Verstappen, whose situation remains uncertain.
