British Grand Prix Trophy Designed by LEGO
In a remarkable fusion of motorsport and creativity, LEGO has designed a set of podium trophies for the upcoming British Grand Prix, commemorating the event’s 75th anniversary. Lando Norris from McLaren secured first place, followed by teammate Oscar Piastri and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg.
Technical Insights
The trophies, created by designer Samuel Liltorp Johnson, include the iconic RAC trophy for the winner and are composed of 2,717 LEGO bricks each, culminating in a weight of over 2 kg. A team of seven builders dedicated over 210 hours to bring these designs to life. “It’s probably the closest that F1 has to something like the FIFA World Cup [trophy],” Johnson stated, emphasizing the gravity of the project.
Significance and Authenticity
The collaboration aligns with Formula 1’s efforts to engage younger audiences while honoring traditional elements of the sport. Emily Prazer, F1’s chief commercial officer, noted the importance of maintaining the RAC trophy’s heritage, stating, “Everything that LEGO has done has been super authentic to our sport.” This partnership aims not only to appeal to new fans but also to resonate with long-time supporters.
Julia Goldin, chief product and marketing officer at LEGO Group, highlighted future activations, indicating a strategic and selective approach to partnerships that should deliver value to fans. "What we are wanting to do with this partnership… is to bring that creativity and enormous possibilities of the brick and shine a new light on that," she asserted.
Conclusion
As the British Grand Prix approaches, the collaboration between LEGO and Formula 1 exemplifies a creative approach to merging tradition with modernity. The trophies not only celebrate a significant milestone in motorsport history but also represent an exciting development in how unique partnerships can enhance fan experiences.
