Austrian Grand Prix Preview: Tyre Strategy Focus

As the Formula 1 community gears up for the Austrian Grand Prix, a significant emphasis is placed on tyre strategy, particularly around Pirelli’s C6 compound. Despite initial expectations, the C6 has not made a notable impact, shifting attention to the hard and medium tyres.

The race in the Styrian sun will likely see a two-stop strategy emerge as the optimal approach, according to Mario Isola, Pirelli’s head of motorsport. Isola emphasized the importance of managing rear tyre temperatures, noting, "Here it’s all about rear overheating." Drivers will need to conserve their tyres, particularly if soft C5 tyres are to be deployed late in the race, possibly under a safety car scenario.

The suggested strategies include either medium-hard-medium or medium-medium-hard combinations, with only Haas possessing a distinct advantage of multiple hard tyre sets. Teams like Aston Martin and Alpine might consider a one-stop strategy, starting on the medium and switching to hard, although this comes with its own set of risks.

Isola cautioned teams about potential degradation issues due to race temperatures exceeding those experienced during practice. He noted, "One stop… is still around seven seconds slower than a two-stop." This cautionary note indicates a clear preference for a more aggressive two-stop strategy, especially for teams that are well-prepared.

Despite the potential use of the soft tyre for performance benefits, Isola highlighted that "it’s not a matter of wear, it’s more a matter of degradation." The performance delta between the soft and medium tyres narrows significantly as the race progresses, which could influence final strategies, particularly if a late safety car alters the race dynamic.

As teams finalize their approaches, it remains to be seen how the interplay of tyre management and race conditions will shape the outcomes in Spielberg.
