Sauber Surges to Double Points Finish in Austria

Sauber Motorsport marked an impressive turnaround at the Austrian Grand Prix, securing a critical double points finish with Nico Hulkenberg and rookie Gabriel Bortoleto taking P8 and P9, respectively. This result is notably Sauber’s first double points finish since the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, underscoring the effectiveness of the team’s ongoing development efforts.

Under the leadership of team principal Jonathan Wheatley, who took the helm prior to the Japanese Grand Prix, Sauber has focused on refining the C45 amid significant upcoming regulatory changes set for 2026. Despite the impending transition to Audi, the team remains committed to enhancing performance this season. "With the work Mattia [Binotto] and James [Key, technical director] are doing back at the factory, it’s a lovely time to be here,” Wheatley emphasized following their strong performance at the Red Bull Ring.

Bortoleto, who recently scored his first points in F1, delivered a flawless performance throughout qualifying and the race. Wheatley praised him, stating, “It was an amazing achievement, building confidence in the car, which shows the confidence the team has.” He also commended the crew’s pitstop performance, which included four stops executed with precision, the fastest being a 2.3 seconds turnaround.

These gains in pitstop efficiency mark a significant improvement from the prior season, where Sauber struggled with numerous issues. Wheatley attributes part of this success to a shift in team dynamics and morale, believing that a motivated team directly contributes to pitstop effectiveness. "Pitstop performance is the manifestation of team spirit. When the team’s highly motivated, they deliver," he added.

Sauber’s strategy during the race involved a two-stop approach despite the eventual success of one-stopping competitors like Liam Lawson and Fernando Alonso. Wheatley noted that better traffic management could have improved their final positions.

Wheatley’s arrival has invigorated other operational aspects, including race strategy and team communication. “We wanted to explore different ways of talking about strategy and how you include a wider audience in that,” he remarked. Looking ahead, the team hopes to build on this momentum and continue to improve their standings in the championship.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sauber’s strong double points finish at the Austrian GP reflects successful development efforts.
