Hulkenberg’s Historic Podium at the British Grand Prix
Silverstone, UK – In a remarkable display of skill and strategy, Nico Hulkenberg secured his first podium finish at the British Grand Prix, a feat that highlights his racing prowess after 239 races in Formula 1. Starting from 19th on the grid, Hulkenberg showcased exceptional talent in challenging wet conditions, ultimately finishing third.
Sauber team principal Jonathan Wheatley lauded Hulkenberg’s performance, calling it one of the finest drives he has witnessed in his career. "Nico drove an outstanding race; one of the best I’ve seen at Silverstone, if not from any driver ever," said Wheatley. "It’s incredible that we’re celebrating a podium now, considering he should have had many earlier in his career."
Hulkenberg’s strategic pit stops played a pivotal role in his success. He made an early transition to intermediate tires and later switched to slicks, capitalizing on the conditions at the right moments. Wheatley emphasized the precision of the team’s strategy: “We had an eye on the weather. Nico felt his intermediates were done, and it was the right decision to box him.”
The final tire change was crucial, with Hulkenberg stopping just one lap after Lewis Hamilton. "We waited to see how the track changed. Our timing was key to getting it right," Wheatley noted.
Hulkenberg’s podium marks a significant milestone in his career, alleviating the long-standing absence of a top-three finish. Wheatley affirmed his belief in Hulkenberg’s capabilities, stating, “Given the right race car and circumstances, I have no doubt he can win a race.”
This historic performance not only highlights Hulkenberg’s talent but also sets a promising precedent for Sauber as they look to build upon this momentum in upcoming races.
