Nico Hulkenberg Achieves First F1 Podium at Silverstone

Nico Hulkenberg made history at the British Grand Prix, crossing the finish line to secure his first Formula 1 podium after an arduous 239 starts. Hulkenberg’s achievement not only ends his record of the most starts without a podium but also sets a new mark for the longest wait for a first podium in F1 history, eclipsing Carlos Sainz’s previous record of 101 starts.

The 37-year-old German driver, competing for Sauber, became the oldest first-time podium finisher since George Follmer, who achieved this feat at 39 years, three months, and 10 days in 1971. Despite starting from 19th position, Hulkenberg navigated mixed weather conditions and displayed remarkable strategic acumen with tire choices, ultimately finishing third.

Reflecting on the race, Hulkenberg remarked, “It’s been a long time coming, hasn’t it? I always knew we have it in us… it was a survival fight for a lot of the race.” He credited the team’s quick decision-making and lack of mistakes for their success. “It was an intense race, but like I said, we didn’t crack,” he added.

The crowd’s thunderous approval upon his podium appearance underscored the significance of his accomplishment, especially as he bested Lewis Hamilton, who was striving for his own podium in front of his home crowd.

Hulkenberg celebrated with his Sauber team, marking their first podium in 13 years with exuberant festivities, including a rendition of "Nico’s on Fire" to the tune of ‘Freed from Desire.’ Team principal Jonathan Wheatley lauded Hulkenberg’s performance, describing it as “one of the best I’ve seen of any driver ever.”

Fernando Alonso echoed the sentiment, stating, “One of the best drivers on the grid that never had the opportunity to have a proper car underneath,” while Carlos Sainz noted Hulkenberg’s talent relative to his career accomplishments. Even championship rival Max Verstappen offered his congratulations, saying, “I think this is a pretty special moment.”

Hulkenberg’s performance serves as testament to resilience in Formula 1, illustrating that dedication to the sport can ultimately lead to deserved success, even after long periods without tangible results. The day concluded not just with personal triumph for Hulkenberg but also amidst a memorable race weekend, as Lando Norris claimed McLaren’s first home victory in over 25 years, making Silverstone a landmark event for multiple drivers and teams.
