Piastri’s Late Penalty Dims British Grand Prix Achievement
Oscar Piastri expressed frustration after finishing second in the British Grand Prix, believing he deserved victory. The McLaren driver received a 10-second time penalty following erratic braking during a safety car restart, which allowed Max Verstappen to overtake him.
According to the stewards’ decision, Piastri braked sharply—reducing speed from 218 kph to 52 kph—at a crucial moment, forcing Verstappen to take evasive action. “This maneuver endangered other drivers,” the stewards noted, referencing Article 55.15 of the FIA Sporting Regulations, which states that drivers must not engage in erratic behavior once the safety car lights are extinguished.
Piastri defended his actions, stating, “I hit the brakes as the lights went out, which was extremely late. I didn’t accelerate; I was controlling the pace.” He expressed disappointment, stating, “It hurts… I know I deserved a lot more than what I got today.”
Despite the penalty, Piastri highlighted the team’s strong performance and the car’s competitiveness, indicating a continuing upward trajectory for McLaren. He did not anticipate team orders to swap positions with teammate Lando Norris post-penalty but acknowledged the request was made in hopes of a different outcome.
“I knew the answer before I asked, but I wanted a glimmer of hope,” he said. “I don’t think McLaren’s decision was wrong. Lando didn’t do anything wrong. I’ll use this frustration to ensure I win more races in the future.”
With valuable lessons learned and a solid race under his belt, Piastri remains focused on future challenges and opportunities, determined to leverage this experience for greater success.
