Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Challenging Debut at Home Grand Prix
Andrea Kimi Antonelli faced a disappointing start to his Formula 1 career at the Imola Grand Prix, retiring on lap 46 due to a throttle failure. The young driver, who began the race from 13th on the grid, had made significant progress to secure eighth place before mechanical issues forced him to the sidelines.
The throttle problem arose shortly after a Virtual Safety Car period. "After two or three laps, I started to have the issue with the throttle… then unfortunately it went off completely," Antonelli explained. He expressed regret over the situation, stating, “Without the problem, my pace would have been much better.”
Despite the setback, Antonelli highlighted the learning experience, indicating that the pressures of competing in front of his home crowd in Bologna contributed to his struggles. "It probably was the worst [weekend] in terms of performance," he admitted. “I didn’t manage the energy that well, which definitely compromised my performance on track.”
Antonelli noted that while his pace improved in cooler conditions, managing tire performance in the intense heat remained a challenge. "I need to still work on my driving… especially with the hot temperature," he said, acknowledging the need for personal growth ahead of the next race in Monaco.
The 18-year-old received overwhelming support from fans, enhancing the emotional depth of his debut weekend. "The most positive thing was the support from the fans… despite the difficult moments," he remarked, indicating his commitment to come back stronger in the following race.
Antonelli’s future prospects remain promising as he continues to adapt and learn in the highly competitive environment of Formula 1.
