Advances in F1 Film Technology: A Look Inside Joseph Kosinski’s Approach

Director Joseph Kosinski has highlighted the technological advancements in filming the upcoming Formula 1 movie compared to his previous work on Top Gun: Maverick. In an interview with journalist Kevin McCarthy, Kosinski detailed the significant upgrades in camera systems and shooting methodologies employed for this new project.

Kosinski explained that while Top Gun utilized six fixed cameras—four focused on the actor in the rear cockpit and two over the shoulder of the pilot—the Formula 1 film features an expanded setup. The production collaborated with the Mercedes Formula 1 team to create custom race cars equipped with 16 distinct camera mounting positions, allowing for four cameras to be operational simultaneously.

The new camera system, internally codenamed "Carmen," is a compact Sony prototype designed to deliver high-quality visuals equivalent to the Venice camera used in Top Gun. This system strategically positions the camera’s sensor and lens in front of the driver, while the recording equipment remains concealed below the radiators.

Both leading actors, Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, are performing their own driving stunts, rendering the production’s challenges unique. This necessitated a real-time focus capability during shooting—an advance made possible by deploying antennas around the track, maintaining connectivity with the base station.

Kosinski emphasized the complexity of achieving real-time image quality and control: "We were able to pull focus in real time while we were shooting, which allowed actors to concentrate on driving at high speeds—upwards of 180 miles per hour—while I managed the technical aspects."

The film is set for global release on June 25, with the North American launch following on June 27. As anticipation grows, Kosinski’s commitment to pushing cinematic boundaries reflects the blending of technology and storytelling within the motorsports genre.
