Cadillac Formula 1 Team Eyes Driver Line-Up as Miami Grand Prix Approaches

As anticipation builds for Cadillac’s unveiling at the Miami Grand Prix, speculation surrounding Sergio Perez’s potential recruitment intensifies. However, sources from Motorsport.com indicate that while discussions are ongoing, no deal has been finalized.

Cadillac, poised to enter the Formula 1 arena as its 11th team in 2026, is under pressure to solidify its driver line-up this summer. With setup at its Silverstone base in full swing, the team must act swiftly to optimize its strategy amidst existing competition for veteran drivers.

Evaluating Perez’s Suitability for Cadillac

Team Principal Graeme Lowdon acknowledged the challenges imposed by delayed approvals, which left Cadillac out of sync with the broader driver market. “By the time we received the go-ahead during the Las Vegas Grand Prix, many 2026 seats were already occupied,” Lowdon remarked. This leaves Cadillac to consider the few experienced drivers still available, with Perez being a prominent candidate.

At 35, Perez boasts 281 Grand Prix starts and has demonstrated his racing prowess with six victories, including an impressive performance at Racing Point. Despite the turbulent end to his time at Red Bull, Perez’s experience offers strategic advantages for Cadillac’s nascent operations. Moreover, his significant backing from Mexican telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim presents substantial commercial benefits, especially as the Mexico City Grand Prix continues through a recent contract extension.

The Motivational Factor for Perez

Reflecting on his career, Perez noted, “Once you step back, you realize how much you give up in life to be in the sport.” He emphasized the importance of finding a project that truly motivates him to return. “If I find a team that appreciates my experience and sees me as a cornerstone rather than a stop-gap, it would be a compelling offer,” he stated.

However, Perez faces challenges that may influence his decision, including the high-risk nature of joining a fledgling team likely to struggle initially.

Alternative Candidates for Cadillac

Should Cadillac also pursue other experienced drivers, Valtteri Bottas emerges as a noteworthy contender. The former Mercedes driver aims for a grid return in 2026, citing technical skills and race experience that align well with Cadillac’s objectives. With 246 starts and ten wins to his name, Bottas presents a competitive option alongside Perez.

Cadillac also harbors ambitions to incorporate American drivers into its roster. While IndyCar talent Colton Herta and F2’s Jak Crawford have been discussed, Lowdon stressed the priority of merit over nationality in driver selection. “We’ll select drivers on merit. While an American driver is desirable, the primary focus will remain on building a strong team,” he stated.

As Cadillac charts its course through the complexities of F1, the decisions made in the coming months will not only determine its competitive viability but also shape the team’s long-term identity on the grid.
