Singapore Grand Prix: Qualifying Insights and Driver Reactions
Singapore, [Date] – Max Verstappen expressed frustration following a contentious qualifying session for the Singapore Grand Prix, highlighting how Lando Norris’s slow return to the pits interfered with his final lap attempt. Verstappen, who was marginally behind George Russell’s pole time before aborting his lap, stated, “That’s what happens when there’s a car in front of you just cruising two seconds in front. So that’s noted. Will be remembered as well.”
Norris, qualifying in fifth, dismissed Verstappen’s complaints, saying, “They always complain – they complain about everything. That’s Red Bull. I didn’t even know. I was like three seconds ahead or something.”
With Verstappen starting behind Norris and Oscar Piastri, who starts three positions ahead of his teammate, Red Bull is keen to rebound. Verstappen, currently 69 points behind Piastri and 44 points adrift of Norris in the championship standings, emphasized the gains made over recent races, stating, “The last three weekends now have been really, really nice… the basis of the car is a lot more solid.”
McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, noted a shift in their competitive position, attributing it to limitations in the MCL39, especially under braking and traction-sensitive conditions like those in Singapore. “In Canada, Baku, and now here in Singapore, we are not the best car… We gained time in mid-corner, but every mid-corner is kind of too short,” Stella explained.
Stella acknowledged that while McLaren has not introduced significant updates, rivals like Red Bull have made notable improvements, including a new front wing and floor design. “There’s a pattern with braking on bumps and curbs… Red Bull has resolved both high drag and Singapore factors,” he added, reflecting on the intensified competition.
As the championship battle unfolds, McLaren must navigate the pressure from Verstappen and Red Bull, particularly as they approach tracks with tighter corners, which may favor Red Bull’s aggressive setup. The upcoming race promises increased competition, keeping fans and teams watching closely.
