Sainz Sr. Contemplating FIA Presidential Bid
Williams team principal James Vowles has endorsed Carlos Sainz Sr. as a strong candidate for the FIA presidency, should he decide to run against current president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Sainz Sr., a two-time World Rally Champion and father of Williams F1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr., is reportedly assessing support for his potential candidacy, as first reported by Motorsport.com.
Vowles emphasized Sainz Sr.’s extensive 40-year experience in motorsport, noting his logical approach to the complexities of the industry. "I don’t believe it would create complications if he were to be successful," Vowles stated, addressing concerns about a conflict of interest given his son’s current racing career.
Detractors have suggested that Sainz Jr.’s interests may conflict with his father’s prospective role. However, Vowles assured that Sainz Sr. maintains a hands-off approach towards his son’s career choices, indicating that any potential impact could be effectively managed. "He recognizes his son as his own man now and actually doesn’t interfere in anything," Vowles said.
Vowles highlighted Sainz Sr.’s broad motorsport knowledge, including experience in rallying and single-seater racing, which he believes would make him a suitable presidential candidate. "He’s already president of some mobility aspects in Spain. This isn’t as big a step as some may think," Vowles explained.
As Sainz Sr. contemplates his decision, he will gauge whether he has the necessary support to challenge Ben Sulayem formally. The motorsport community now watches closely to see if he will announce his candidacy in the coming weeks.
