Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Qualifying: Lando Norris Reflects on Performance
IMOLA, Italy — McLaren driver Lando Norris addressed his performance in qualifying for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, acknowledging a series of mistakes and expressing dissatisfaction with his results. Norris qualified fourth, behind George Russell, Max Verstappen, and his teammate Oscar Piastri, who secured pole position with a commanding time almost three tenths faster than Norris.
In post-qualifying comments, Norris stated, “I made a lot of mistakes… Never good enough in my final lap in quali. Everyone goes quicker and I always go slower. Just not good enough.” This performance continues a trend for Norris, who trails Piastri four to three in their qualifying head-to-head this season.
Norris reflected on his struggles in Q3, admitting that none of his performances this year have met his expectations. He expressed reluctance to attribute the issues to the car, which Piastri is utilizing effectively. “I’m not going to just blame the car, that’s not me,” Norris noted, emphasizing a desire to identify areas for improvement.
Despite the setback, Norris remains optimistic about tomorrow’s race, citing McLaren’s recent proficiency in tire management as a potential advantage. “I have to just hope the tyres die very quickly. I think we can do better as a team than others, maybe that will open up my chances for overcuts or undercuts on the guys ahead,” he stated.
As the team works on maximizing the performance of the MCL39, all eyes will be on Norris to see if he can capitalize on tire strategy during the race. The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix promises to be a crucial test for both driver and team.
